Job Description

Join a team that includes two full time Child and Adolescent psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and a Child and Adolescent Fellowship trained executive Director of Health Care.

Jefferson Hills is seeking a BC/BE Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist for our dynamic and innovative inpatient programs. New Vistas is a 27 bed non-hospital based acute unit. It exists within a network of community based services and provides treatment for Colorado youth from a mostly Medicaid population. New Vistas admits acutely ill psychiatric patients from local ERs and walk-in centers that do not require a hospital based unit. Jefferson Hills is also part of the Colorado Crisis Connection network of crisis mental health services. We operate the only Child and Adolescent Crisis and Stabilization Unit (CSU) in the state. The CSU is a 16 bed acute evaluation and triage unit. Children can receive intensive individual and family therapy aimed at resolving crises that don’t require inpatient management by a physician. Jefferson Hills also has a 70+ bed residential unit and we recently received our license to operate residential, inpatient, and outpatient substance use disorder services. We currently have a residential track for SUD and we are looking to expand. All staff at Jefferson hills are trained in Trauma Informed Care and Motivational Interviewing.  


-M-F schedule with flexible hours and no mandatory weekend or overnight call.

Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Position Purpose:

  • Direct patient treatment and some administrative duties. Provides psychiatric diagnostic/medication evaluations, and individual and group medication management. Provide children/youth and families with all necessary medication education and psycho-education.

  • Orders and monitors appropriate laboratory tests at clinically indicated frequency. Monitors and reviews children/youth charts for medication/medical issues with appropriate follow-up.

  • Provides physician-review of medical records as clinically indicated, and as required by contracts or as necessitated state or federal regulations.

  • Provides clinical supervision and/or consultation to multidisciplinary treatment teams in developing and implementing clinically appropriate individual treatment plans. Provides crisis support for clinical emergencies as arranged.

  • Attends mandatory training and complies with individualized training plans if required. Daily rounds with multi-discipline team including input from nursing, therapists, education, and milieu counselors.

  • Reports high risk/problem cases and solicits consultation and help as needed. Attends supervision at times and intervals agreed upon with supervisor, and incorporates supervision into clinical practice and job performance.

  • Engages children/youth and their families in the treatment process and goal-setting.   Identifies/provides appropriate intervention for risk factors including lethality. Works constructively with children/youth to reach agreed upon outcome, and coordinates care with internal and external providers.

  • Maintains appropriate professional boundaries and standards. Maintains effective interpersonal relations with children/youth, peers, subordinates management, visitors, and the general public.

  • Exhibits professionalism, enthusiasm, courtesy, adaptability, flexibility, and spirit of cooperation in the work environment.

  • Effectively responds to children/youth/family needs and problems, initiates and maintains positive interactions, and provides timely response to phone calls, pages, email and other requests. Provides appropriate follow-up with receiving psychiatrist as indicated.

  • Works cooperatively with other community agencies. As appropriate and as agreed with supervisor, participates in committees, task forces, of Jefferson Hills or the community.

  • Works in partnership with all departments to develop and implement PQI plan; this involves assessment of critical indicators of performance in all departments as it relates to the mission of the organization. Indicators are developed in conjunction with quality standards, audit standards, and community standards.

Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required:

  • MD or DO degree (or international equivalent), satisfactory completion of ACGME-accredited residency training program in General Psychiatry (adult psychiatrists) and in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (child and adolescent psychiatrists), unrestricted Colorado medical license and DEA certificate; ABPN Board-certification is desirable but not required.

  • Physician must understand the acute assessment and treatment of children and adolescents, community mental health systems of care and principles of managed healthcare. Physician must be knowledgeable and current with regard to psychopharmacology, medical/psychiatric interface, and evidence-based neuropsychiatric/neurobehavioral diagnosis and treatment.

  • Physician must be able to provide leadership to/collaboration with multidisciplinary mental health team in the delivery of comprehensive and integrated clinically appropriate interventions. Basic computer skills such as e-mail, word processing, interface with/documentation in electronic medical record and prescription writing are required.
